President of Vietnam and King of Thailand hold talks in Hanoi

King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand is on a state visit to Vietnam

Vietnamese President To Lam and his wife, Ngo Phuong Ly, presided over the official welcoming ceremony for King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua of Thailand and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana at the National Assembly building in Hanoi. The Thai royal couple’s state visit to Vietnam took place to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, according to Vietnam News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Thai King’s current visit to Vietnam is also his first state visit to the country since his accession to the throne. Maha Vajiralongkorn had previously visited Vietnam in 1992 and 1997 as Crown Prince of Thailand.

At the start of the ceremonial reception, the motorcade carrying the King and Queen of Thailand arrived at the National Assembly building. President To Lam and his wife welcomed them on the red carpet. The ceremony was also attended by members of Vietnam’s Politburo, as well as ambassadors and chargés d’affaires from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries in Vietnam.

Immediately after the ceremony, the President of Vietnam and the King of Thailand led their countries’ high-level delegations in talks. Both leaders spoke highly of the positive development of relations between the two countries over the past 50 years – from friendly, good-neighbourly relations to a strategic partnership in 2013 and a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2025.

To Lam and Maha Vajiralongkorn agreed to provide guidance on effectively promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation, to actively develop people-to-people exchanges, cooperation in the fields of education, culture, tourism and transport connectivity, to strengthen cooperation between local authorities, and to establish further practical links, thereby contributing to the further deepening of relations between the two countries.

Thailand is Vietnam’s largest partner within ASEAN. The total volume of bilateral trade in 2025 amounted to US$22.08 billion, and for the first eight months of 2026 – US$18.53 billion. Thailand ranks 8th among the 153 countries investing in Vietnam’s economy.
