Belarus ranks among leaders in achieving sustainable development goals
The country has achieved an estimated 83 per cent of the targets across all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, with clean energy among the areas showing the strongest progress

Belarus ranks among the leading countries in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to Sergey Aleynik, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus. He noted that the country ranks 35th globally, with progress across all 17 SDGs estimated at around 83 per cent.
Belarus has been consistently implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and has established a national framework for its implementation, reports BelTA, a partner of TV BRICS. In 2025, the country adopted its National Sustainable Development Strategy until 2040. According to Aleynik, five of the 17 goals have already been practically fully achieved.
Among them is SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, which focuses on ensuring access to reliable, sustainable and modern energy. Aleynik highlighted the joint construction of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant with Russia as an important contribution to this goal. The project has enabled Belarus to develop high-tech electricity generation and strengthen its expertise in advanced energy technologies.
The national coordinator also noted the contribution of Russian partners to the development of Belarusian energy infrastructure. According to him, cooperation between the two countries in this field has evolved from individual projects towards a sustainable model of interaction.
Young people are expected to play an important role in advancing the country’s sustainable development agenda. Sergey Aleynik stressed the importance of involving the younger generation in developing Belarus’s technological and energy potential and in shaping new approaches to sustainable economic development.
Belarus is also preparing to host a meeting of national coordinators for sustainable development from Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states in Minsk this autumn. The participants are expected to review progress towards the SDGs across the organisation, where implementation currently stands at around 62 per cent, and discuss cooperation priorities for the period after 2030.
