Expert: BRICS has become example of new and equal model of cooperation between countries

According to the expert, Russia, as one of the founding countries, has created infrastructure to support the group and fostered its distinctive spirit of cooperation

The BRICS Summit in India in 2026 should address a range of issues concerning, above all, global cooperation, global governance and global security. This was stated by Aleksey Maslov, Director of the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University, in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS.

“BRICS has evolved into a highly effective platform and demonstrated a new model for bringing countries together, one that is not based on common models of development, documents or a single currency. Most importantly, however, it is based on equal relations between countries without creating a formalised organisation, because BRICS is a group, a platform that has genuinely raised a whole range of issues. [...] These include alternative financial systems, money transfers and large-scale lending between countries without making those states dependent,” Maslov noted.

Speaking about Russia's role, the expert recalled that the country was among the founders of BRICS alongside China, India and other countries. It was important to ensure that the group did not simply become a formalised organisation for discussing common issues without taking decisions. At a number of summits, Russia raised issues that continuously stimulated the development of BRICS.

“Russia has managed to give BRICS a distinctive spirit of cooperation. Most importantly, Russia's example [...] has attracted many other new countries to BRICS. Just look at how much the group has grown. I think Russia's role as a mediator here is extremely important,” Maslov said.

Russia has also established a number of institutions to support the development of BRICS, including business councils, research institutes and analytical centres. According to the speaker, they help the group develop both intellectually and in terms of expert expertise.
