The BRICS group should move from extensive growth to intensive development and focus on initiatives that deliver practical benefits to participating countries. This was stated by Maksim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office of Russia and Special Presidential Representative for Financial and Economic Cooperation with BRICS countries, in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS.
Oreshkin recalled that Russia was one of the founding countries of the group: the idea for the first meetings involving Moscow, New Delhi and Beijing emerged in the mid-2000s. Over the years, the format has evolved from a dialogue club into a fully-fledged platform for cooperation across a broad range of issues.
“The economies of BRICS countries account for 40 per cent of global GDP. This already represents a significant share of technological development and international trade and, most importantly, the future of the global economy. In other words, all these shares – in gross output, technology and trade – are increasing and growing every year. And this group is playing an increasingly important role in global development,” he noted.
The speaker emphasised that, at both government and business levels, Russia has broad opportunities to promote initiatives that are important for the country, as well as for Russian companies to conclude mutually beneficial agreements in the growing BRICS markets.
“The next stage is to move from extensive to intensive development. The more significant initiatives that already exist should begin to deliver practical results for many countries. BRICS should become a platform that brings countries together in implementing these initiatives,” Oreshkin said.
