Expert: India can drive BRICS cooperation in energy, space, and digital technologies

Facilitating trade and investment between member countries is one of the areas where BRICS can further deepen cooperation, Subba Rao Pavuluri, President of the SIA-India, said in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS.
According to the expert, BRICS countries have significant expertise across various sectors that can be shared within the group. He also pointed to initiatives aimed at making it easier to transfer funds between countries as an important area of cooperation.
"There is a trade and investment part, energy security, and digital technologies. Likewise, there is much expertise available within the BRICS nations, so they want to share with each other, but more and more," Subba Rao Pavuluri said.
Energy cooperation is among the priorities of India's BRICS Chairship in 2026. According to Pavuluri, the country is focusing on sustainability and innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI), while cooperation in digital technologies could support the development of energy infrastructure and storage.
"A BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence has to come up for the small grid, the spot grid and energy storage. That becomes very, very important among the BRICS nations," the expert said.
Pavuluri also highlighted India's experience in the space sector, particularly in space-based Earth observation. According to him, these technologies have a range of applications and could be shared with other BRICS countries, including those in Africa.
The expert also identified digital connectivity as an important area for cooperation. He noted India's extensive experience in digital technologies and satellite-based connectivity, which could provide additional opportunities for collaboration among BRICS countries.
"Digital connectivity: India is already number one in the world in terms of digital usage. Particularly on the use of the bandwidth coming from the satellites. So that's going to be very useful," he said.
Pavuluri further pointed to India's experience in agriculture and water management as areas where the country can share technologies and expertise with other BRICS members. According to the expert, such exchanges can contribute to practical cooperation and strengthen ties among countries within the group.
