BRICS countries seek to conclude single agreement on recognition of diplomas and academic degrees
Recognition of qualifications currently operates on a bilateral basis, but the parties aim to establish a common agreement for all BRICS countries

At the upcoming BRICS Summit, participants intend to make progress towards concluding a multilateral agreement on the mutual recognition of higher education diplomas and academic degrees, including PhD degrees. This was stated by Vladimir Filippov, President of Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, a TV BRICS partner, in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS.
“We have made substantial progress in the recognition of qualifications between our countries. At present, these are bilateral agreements between specific countries within BRICS. But we are moving towards an agreement that would cover all BRICS countries and provide for the mutual recognition of both higher education diplomas and academic degrees: Candidate of Sciences, Doctor of Sciences and PhD,” he said.
According to him, a decision was taken in 2015 to establish the BRICS Network University. Today, the group includes 178 leading universities, which joined on the recommendation of their respective countries' ministries of education.
“In fact, within the framework of this university, academic exchanges have increased sharply, both among professors and teaching staff. I can say that, taking just Peoples' Friendship University of Russia as an example, we currently have students from more than 160 countries around the world. Most of these students, I emphasise, are from BRICS countries,” he added.
In addition to education, the Summit is expected to discuss cooperation in the financial, economic and energy sectors, as well as global issues related to climate, the environment and food security.
Filippov highlighted the growth in trade conducted in national currencies within BRICS, which, in his view, indicates the strengthening of the sovereignty of participating countries. He also noted that the number of countries in the group has increased significantly and that new membership applications may be considered at the upcoming Summit.
