Chile to develop system for forecasting extreme weather events
Researchers plan to analyse data from the past 50–60 years to determine how the climate has changed in different parts of the region and where extreme events occur most frequently
Researchers in Chile’s Maule region are to develop an early warning system for extreme weather events. It will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to forecast frosts, extreme heat and heavy rainfall. This was reported by El Ciudadano, a partner of TV BRICS.
The project is scheduled to run for three years. Its main objective is to help farmers prepare in advance for weather conditions that could affect crop yields and agricultural operations.
To this end, experts will create a unified regional climate database. This will include historical data and information from various sources.
Based on this data, experts will develop models capable of forecasting hazardous weather conditions in advance, taking into account the specific characteristics of different regions and agricultural practices.
The project is led by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Talca.
