Masoud Pezeshkian calls on BRICS to turn economic resilience into practical cooperation

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on BRICS to move from political declarations to the creation of practical mechanisms to strengthen countries’ economic resilience and expand financial and trade cooperation. The Iranian leader made the statement while addressing participants of the BRICS Summit, held in India on 12–13 September, according to Tehran Times, a TV BRICS partner.
The Iranian President called on BRICS countries to increase their collective capacity for economic resilience by expanding trade in national currencies and strengthening the New Development Bank (NDB). He also stated that BRICS can help its members create independent mechanisms for trade, investment and financial cooperation.
“Resilience cannot exist without cooperation, cooperation cannot be sustainable without justice, and sustainable development is impossible without peace and security,” Pezeshkian said.
He added that Iran’s geopolitical position, energy resources and transit potential could open additional opportunities for BRICS to strengthen trade and energy ties between member countries. The President of the Islamic Republic specifically highlighted the Chabahar Port in south-eastern Iran as a major transit hub capable of connecting the north and south with the east and west. According to the President, Iran is ready to regain its historical role as a regional crossroads and create new opportunities for trade, investment and broader economic cooperation.
The President also welcomed increased Indian investment and the development of joint ventures in Chabahar, viewing the port as part of broader Iranian-Indian economic cooperation. He emphasised Iran’s longstanding historical and cultural ties with India and stated that Tehran intends to further expand bilateral political, economic, cultural and scientific cooperation.
The focus on transit and connectivity reflects Iran’s broader efforts to use its geographical position as a bridge between major markets and transport corridors. Within BRICS, Tehran views these opportunities as a potential contribution to deeper economic integration among developing economies.
