Expert: BRICS strengthens Global South’s role in global economy
Senior researcher Mikatekiso Kubayi highlights the group’s contribution to economic development and the growing participation of emerging economies in global economic governance

BRICS has strengthened the role of the Global South in the global economy and created a platform for emerging economies to contribute more actively to international economic development, according to Mikatekiso Kubayi, Senior Researcher at the South African Research Chair on African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy at the University of Johannesburg. He shared this view in an exclusive interview with Soweto TV, a partner of TV BRICS.
Kubayi noted that economic cooperation and development have been central to BRICS since its establishment. In his view, one of the important ideas behind the grouping was to ensure that major emerging economies have an appropriate voice in the governance of the global economy.
“An economy as large as India's, an economy as large as China's, an economy as large as Russia's, Brazil, or South Africa, ought to have an adequate enough voice and influence in the arrangement and the management of the global economy,” he said.
The researcher stressed that development across the Global South remains one of the principal areas of BRICS activity.
“The main focus of the BRICS group has been on the global economy, the development for the Global South, and such economic issues,” Kubayi explained.
Assessing the results achieved by the group, the expert emphasised its development since its establishment and its growing role in international affairs. Kubayi also linked the evolution of BRICS with the broader emergence of a multipolar international system.
According to Mikatekiso Kubayi, the development of BRICS demonstrates the growing capacity of emerging economies to participate in shaping the global economic landscape, while cooperation within the BRICS continues to place economic development and the interests of the Global South at the centre of its agenda.
