Russian scientists develop equipment for quickly detecting defective parts in manufacturing

Researchers at South Ural State University (SUSU) have patented the first piece of equipment in Russia capable of identifying a defective workpiece in serial production of parts within five seconds. The equipment speeds up the inspection process and fully automates it, according to the university's website, a partner of TV BRICS.

A defective workpiece results in the production of an unusable part, as well as unnecessary expenditure of electricity and financial resources. The new equipment addresses this problem by identifying substandard workpieces in advance.

Five induction and ultrasonic sensors installed in the equipment read the parameters of the workpiece without human involvement. According to the developers' estimates, the new system will make it possible to identify up to 30 per cent of defects in each batch of workpieces. Previously, this required manual work by specialists.

The proposed approach will enable enterprises to save resources several-fold. The SUSU researchers' development can be used at plants where cylindrical workpieces need to be inspected. The equipment is expected to be in demand among manufacturers in the forging and pressing, metallurgical and machine-building industries.
