Expert: Iran can strengthen BRICS financial and development cooperation

Iran can make a significant contribution to the further development of BRICS cooperation through its energy resources, strategic geographical position and participation in the group's financial institutions, Shahrokh Saei, International Desk Editor of Tehran Times, said in an exclusive interview with Tehran Times, a TV BRICS partner.
The expert noted that Iran's role in BRICS has been developing since the country officially joined the group in January 2024. He highlighted the New Development Bank (NDB) as an important area of potential cooperation, noting that Iran's prospective membership could strengthen its institutional role within BRICS and provide access to development financing.
"Iran's NDB membership can enhance the bank's capital assets and provide Iran with opportunities to have access to development funding," he noted.
Saei also highlighted Iran's extensive energy resources and strategic geographical position as important elements of the country's contribution to BRICS cooperation.
He also pointed to the broader development of BRICS institutions over the past two decades. The 2026 BRICS Summit marks the 20th anniversary of the group, which has developed a number of mechanisms for economic and financial cooperation.
He added that the expansion of the group and the participation of new members, including Iran, further demonstrate the global relevance of BRICS.
Looking ahead, Saei said Iran's expertise could also contribute to the development of financial cooperation within BRICS.
