Expert: BRICS plays growing role in shaping multipolar world

Piti Srisangnam, Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation, highlighted the group's growing role in shaping a more inclusive global governance system

BRICS can play a greater role in strengthening global multilateral cooperation and developing practical solutions for a more inclusive international system, Piti Srisangnam, Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation, said in an exclusive interview with Thai PBS, a TV BRICS partner.

Looking ahead to the 2026 BRICS Summit, the expert said he expects the group to further develop its role in global governance and contribute to greater predictability and stability in international relations.

"As we look towards the 2026 BRICS Summit in India, my core expectation is to see BRICS step up and act as a mature, responsible anchor of global multilateralism," Piti Srisangnam said.

He highlighted the economic and demographic scale of BRICS as an important foundation for its contribution to the international system.

"The global community desperately needs predictabilities. BRICS possesses the sheer demographics, economic output, and strategic depth to offer these kinds of stabilities," the expert noted.

According to Piti Srisangnam, the Summit could provide an opportunity to advance from political declarations towards practical institutional solutions aimed at strengthening resilience and inclusiveness. Among the areas he highlighted was the development of fair cross-border financial mechanisms.

The expert also spoke about Thailand's interest in becoming a full BRICS member. He said membership would allow the country to contribute to discussions on global solutions while ensuring that the interests and economic realities of Southeast Asia are represented at a high level.

"Becoming a full member will allow Thailand to lend our diplomatic weight to these global solutions, ensure that ASEAN, the Southeast Asia economic reality, is represented at the highest level, and place our domestic economies' query inside the core framework of the next generation's global governance," he said.

He also highlighted the transformation of BRICS over the past two decades. According to the expert, the group has evolved considerably since its establishment in 2006, when Brazil, Russia, India and China formed the original BRIC group.

Piti Srisangnam emphasised that the evolution of BRICS has also contributed to a greater role for countries of the Global South in international discussions.
