Iran and Russia agree new visa measures for athletes, businesspeople and truck drivers
Tehran and Moscow introduce new arrangements to facilitate travel and support trade, sports cooperation and business ties

Iran and Russia have agreed on a series of measures to ease travel between the two countries for athletes, businesspeople and freight truck drivers following the ninth meeting of the Iranian-Russian Joint Consular Commission in Moscow, as reported by IRNA, a TV BRICS partner.
Mojtaba Shasti Karimi, Director General for Consular Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and head of the Iranian delegation, said the meeting produced several decisions aimed at simplifying travel procedures and supporting closer bilateral economic and humanitarian ties.
Under the new arrangements, sports teams travelling between Iran and Russia will be able to obtain dedicated sports visas when their participation is formally submitted by Iran’s Ministry of Sport and Youth or relevant sports federations. The measure is intended to make travel easier for athletes taking part in competitions and other sporting activities in the two countries.
The two sides are also continuing work on the possible abolition of visa requirements for organised tourist groups travelling between Iran and Russia.
Trade-related travel is another key area covered by the agreements. Freight truck drivers transporting goods between the two countries will be eligible for long-term residence visas, according to Karimi. The measure is designed to facilitate cross-border freight movement and reduce practical barriers affecting the transportation of goods.
Business travellers will also have new options for entering Russia. Under one route, Iranian and Russian businesspeople can obtain visas after receiving invitations from commercial partners or host organisations in the destination country. A second option will allow businesspeople who do not yet have a local partner or host organisation to apply for a one-month electronic visa in order to explore commercial opportunities and identify potential partners.
The meeting also resulted in an agreement to allow electronic visas for certain Iranian citizens travelling to Russia.
The agreements were reached as part of the wider work of the Joint Consular Commission, which provides a framework for addressing practical issues affecting citizens and travellers from both countries.
