UN General Assembly establishes International Day of Planet Greening at Kazakhstan’s initiative

The initiative was put forward by President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has adopted a Kazakhstan-initiated resolution proclaiming 22 April as the International Day of Greening the Planet. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Kazakhstan on its website.

The ministry noted that in September 2025, during the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev put forward the initiative. The resolution “International Day of Greening the Planet” was co-sponsored by 32 states representing various regions of the world.

“The adoption of the resolution reflects Kazakhstan’s consistent contribution to advancing the global environmental agenda and bringing together international efforts to protect the environment, restore ecosystems, expand green spaces, and foster environmental awareness,” the press service of the Kazakh MFA said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan noted that the document is intended to help raise global awareness of the importance of greening and restoring natural ecosystems.

In Kazakhstan itself, the nationwide environmental campaign “Taza Qazaqstan” (“Clean Kazakhstan”) is being carried out. It aims to promote responsible attitudes towards the environment, improve public spaces, and enhance environmental awareness across society. As previously reported by Kazinform, a TV BRICS partner, citing the Ministry of Ecology of Kazakhstan, participants in the campaign have planted more than 1 million trees since the beginning of 2026.
