Archaeological research in the UAE is revealing new insights into early human settlement, ancient communities and cultural connections across the region

Archaeological discoveries and scientific studies announced across the UAE in 2026 are providing new insights into the country's human history, settlement patterns and ancient economic life. Ongoing surveys, excavations and research are helping specialists better understand how communities adapted to environmental changes and maintained connections across the region, as reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.
In Sharjah, an international research project at the Buhais Rockshelter uncovered evidence of repeated early human occupation over widely separated periods. The study identified human presence dating from 60,000 to 16,000 years ago, offering evidence of how communities adapted to significant climate fluctuations and periods of drought.
The UAE's archaeological heritage also received further international recognition in 2026, when the Ministry of Culture announced the inclusion of five Emirati sites on the Islamic World Heritage List of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ICESCO). The additions comprise Saruq Al Hadid in Dubai, as well as Al Faya, the Khorfakkan Historic Towers and Forts, Al Nahwa, and Wadi Al Helo in Sharjah.
These sites preserve evidence of different periods of the UAE's history. Wadi Al Helo contains Bronze Age rock carvings and historic village remains, while Nahwa features rock art spanning from the Bronze Age to more recent periods. Researchers are also using 3D digital technology to document archaeological features and support their preservation.
According to the source, these initiatives highlight the UAE's focus on archaeological research, restoration, digital documentation and international heritage recognition, helping preserve and share the country's historical legacy.
