Government strategic infrastructure portfolio rises to US$104.66 billion as authorities prioritise water, transport, energy and municipal projects
South Africa is stepping up efforts to accelerate infrastructure development as the government seeks to attract investment, strengthen economic activity and create new jobs. This is reported by MENA, a TV BRICS partner.
The value of the country's strategic government infrastructure project portfolio has reached US$104.66 billion, up from approximately US$21.31 billion in 2020. President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa said the infrastructure pipeline had expanded almost fivefold since the beginning of the decade.
Projects worth US$16.55 billion are expected to enter the tendering and contracting stages in the coming period. The portfolio covers key areas including water and sanitation, transport and logistics, energy and electricity, and municipal infrastructure.
The government has also begun publishing quarterly performance reports on infrastructure projects. The measure is intended to strengthen monitoring, improve transparency and provide a clearer picture of progress from project preparation to implementation.
South Africa's economy grew by 1.1 per cent in 2025, while gross fixed capital formation stood at around 14 per cent of GDP. The government is placing greater emphasis on infrastructure projects that are sufficiently prepared to secure financing and move into implementation.
The national project pipeline contains more than 170 projects, including 55 projects already under construction or implementation with a combined value exceeding US$25.51 billion.
Monetary policy is also being shaped by the need to support economic stability. The South African Reserve Bank kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged while raising its economic growth forecast to 1.4 per cent, from 1.2 per cent previously.
The government is now relying on faster infrastructure delivery to turn development plans into tangible investment, expand productive capacity, improve public services and support employment.
