Ethiopia intends to position Addis Ababa as a leading African healthcare hub, including for specialised medical care and medical tourism. This was stated by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, according to Fana Media Corporation, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Ethiopia also intends to expand local production of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and diagnostic tools.
One of the key areas of focus will be the development of public-private partnerships and regional cooperation. The authorities hope to attract further investment into the healthcare sector and strengthen collaboration between government bodies, medical organisations, investors and other partners.
Ethiopia is also prepared to support the establishment of the Africa Healthcare Federation’s continental headquarters in Addis Ababa. According to Temesgen Tiruneh, this will strengthen the capital’s position as a hub for African investment in healthcare, political dialogue and regional cooperation.
More broadly, the country aims to establish Addis Ababa as a leading African medical centre, capable of attracting patients from other countries and supporting the development of the healthcare economy in East Africa.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that the effectiveness of these efforts should be assessed in terms of the volume of investment attracted, the businesses established, the production of medicines and medical equipment, and the development of partnerships, as well as improvements in quality of care and the number of lives saved.
