Iran presents two domestically developed catalysts for oil and gas industry
The new products are designed for hydrogen and synthesis gas production
Iran has presented two domestically developed catalysts for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries: a chromium-free high-temperature catalyst and a medium-temperature catalyst. Both are designed for conversion processes, according to Mehr News Agency, a TV BRICS partner.
The catalysts are used in hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and synthesis gas production facilities, as well as in certain stages of the oil refining and petrochemical industries. The choice between a high-temperature and a medium-temperature catalyst depends on the process design and operating conditions. During steam conversion, carbon monoxide reacts with steam to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
One of the products presented is a chromium-free high-temperature conversion catalyst. Traditional high-temperature conversion catalysts may contain chromium compounds as promoters (additives that enhance the catalyst's performance). Removing chromium from the composition helps reduce risks associated with the handling and disposal of chromium-containing materials and represents a technological step towards safer catalyst formulations.
The second product is a medium-temperature conversion catalyst designed to increase the conversion rate of carbon monoxide under intermediate temperature conditions.
The developers note that domestic production of such catalysts can not only replace imported products but also shorten supply chains, reduce foreign currency costs and limit the impact of import restrictions. It can also make it easier for industrial operators to access technical support and supplies of replacement catalysts.
Catalysts are considered strategically important components of the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors, the report notes.
