Brazilian Chamber approves renewable energy incentive programme

Brazil's Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill to create the Energy Transition Acceleration Programme (Paten), aimed at encouraging sustainable development initiatives through loans to companies from the federal government. This is reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

The bill will allow companies with projects approved under the Paten programme to negotiate the possibility of discounts and instalments on loans that are difficult to repay.

The programme targets infrastructure proposals and the expansion or creation of sustainable energy production parks.

Among the programme's priorities are technology and production projects for renewable fuels such as ethanol, aviation biokerosene, biodiesel, biomethane and low-carbon hydrogen, as well as initiatives related to energy from solid waste.

The programme also prioritises the expansion of the production and transmission of energy from renewable sources, including solar, wind, biomass, biogas, and hydropower, including in rural areas.

One of the main changes introduced by the deputies was the inclusion of a target aimed at stimulating the transition from coal to other energy sources by strengthening economic sectors that can replace coal activities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
