China and Brazil sign agreement on clean energy

China and Brazil signed a 30-year franchise agreement on the Brazil northeast ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) power transmission line project, which is expected to be operational by 2029. The initiative aims to channel clean energy sources such as wind, solar and hydropower from Brazil's northeastern and northern regions to the country's central regions, contributing to Brazil's national efforts to transition to clean and low-carbon energy. This is reported by CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.

The project, with a total length of 1,468 kilometres, includes the construction of an 800kV direct current transmission line to transmit 5 million kilowatts of clean energy from wind and solar farms in northeastern Brazil to critical areas in the southeast of the country, including the major metropolitan areas of Brasilia.

The project is expected to meet the electricity needs of more than 12 million people and contribute to Brazil's green development goals by providing a continuous flow of renewable energy generated in the thriving wind and solar sectors of the northeast region.

Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil Alexandre Silveira emphasised the importance of this megaproject in improving the security and stability of Brazil's energy system, and endorsed the development of wind and solar energy in the Northeast region to strengthen Brazil's economy and society towards a greener and carbon-neutral future.
