Egypt steps up support for pharmaceutical industry development

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly led a to assess national efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s pharmaceutical sector, with a focus on expanding domestic production and enhancing the investment climate for international pharmaceutical companies. Present at the meeting were key officials including Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of Finance, Ahmed Kouchouk, the Heads of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement (UPA).

During the briefing, EDA Chairman Ali El-Ghamrawy provided an overview of the sector’s current state. He reported notable gains in local pharmaceutical sales in 2024, with expectations for continued momentum in 2025.

He assured that supplies of essential drugs remain stable across major therapeutic categories such as hormones, cardiovascular treatments, oncology, and corticosteroids.

El-Ghamrawy also pointed to the growing presence of foreign companies in Egypt’s pharmaceutical market, with a 43 per cent year-on-year increase in sales recorded in 2024.
