Indonesia has the potential to become a leading centre for hydrogen production, trade and development in Asia as demand for low-carbon energy grows across the region. According to the country's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, expanding infrastructure and increasing regional demand are creating favourable conditions for the development of the hydrogen sector, as reported by ANTARA.
Speaking in Jakarta, Head of the Ministry’s Human Resources Development Agency, Prahoro Nurtjahyo, said the global energy transition has entered a new stage, with greater emphasis on supplying clean energy to hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry, shipping, logistics and transport. He noted that hydrogen can connect the energy, industrial and transport sectors within a unified low-carbon system.
Prahoro stressed that hydrogen development is expected to support Indonesia’s long-term national priorities alongside its environmental goals. According to him, expanding the hydrogen industry will contribute to the country’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 while strengthening energy self-sufficiency, industrial development and economic competitiveness.
The official added that the government has established a strategic framework for hydrogen development through the National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap and Government Regulation No. 40 of 2025 on National Energy Policy. These documents identify hydrogen and ammonia as important energy sources for reducing carbon emissions in industry, power generation and transport.
He also emphasised that the sector’s future growth will depend not only on increasing production capacity but also on creating an integrated ecosystem linking production, storage, distribution and end use. According to Prahoro, such an approach will help ensure the sustainable development of Indonesia’s hydrogen industry.
