India builds world’s largest renewable energy park in state of Gujarat
Khavda Park will be located on the salt plains of the Rann of Kutch in the west of the country
In India, a park will be created that will be capable of supplying energy to nearly 18 million homes. Its capacity will reach 30 GW, and its area will exceed 72,000 hectares. This was reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
The project will combine around 20 GW of solar energy and 10 GW of wind energy. The hybrid design will ensure more stable generation – daytime solar output will be complemented by round-the-clock wind power.
Both public and private companies are involved in the development. At the same time, India has allocated significant funding specifically for the development of wind energy within the project.
The project was launched in 2020 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At present, facilities with a capacity of 1 GW have already been commissioned.
The authorities plan to address a number of challenges arising during the project’s implementation, such as harsh working conditions in the desert, instability in energy generation due to the lack of storage systems, and the risk of damage to the fragile ecosystem of the salt plains.
This will make it possible to transform previously underutilised land into a major energy hub, create new jobs, and reduce the country’s dependence on coal, the source stated.
