India unveils key initiatives to revolutionise the fisheries and aquaculture sector

The event underscores India's commitment to sustainable practices within the BRICS group

In a landmark celebration of World Fisheries Day 2024, the Indian government has unveiled an array of transformative initiatives aimed at revolutionising the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The event, themed "India's Blue Transformation: Strengthening Small-Scale and Sustainable Fisheries," underscores India's commitment to sustainable practices and its pivotal role within the BRICS economic group. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

Held in New Delhi, the event featured an esteemed lineup, including Manuel Barange, Assistant Director General of the Fisheries Division at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. The gathering also welcomed ambassadors, international delegates, and global fisheries experts, reflecting the growing global emphasis on sustainable aquaculture.

The highlight of the event was the introduction of key initiatives, including a comprehensive data collection effort to guide evidence-based policymaking; tackling marine plastic pollution in alignment with global sustainability goals; and promoting low-cost, environmentally friendly fishing operations.

Additionally, the Coastal Aquaculture Authority launched its Single Window System, streamlining the online registration of coastal aquaculture farms, a major step in boosting operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to establish a framework for a Voluntary Carbon Market. This initiative promotes carbon-sequestering practices, emphasising India's leadership in integrating sustainability within fisheries and aquaculture.

The source claims that India, the world’s second-largest fish producer, contributes 8 per cent of global fish output. Recent government investments of over US$4.63 billion across a number of initiatives have cemented India's status as a global leader in inland aquaculture and shrimp production.

World Fisheries Day 2024 reaffirms India’s vision for an inclusive, sustainable fisheries ecosystem, aligning with global sustainability goals and the broader BRICS economic agenda.
