Indian Railways on track to achieve 100% electrification in coming months

Indian Railways will become the largest green railway in the world once electrification is completed. Already, many regions are 100 per cent electrified. Railways are accelerating upgradation with electric locomotives outnumbering diesel locomotives.

There are plans to electrify 7,188 kilometres this year and next. Switching to electric traction will help reduce carbon emissions by 24 per cent by 2027-28. This is reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.

Railways electrified 7,188 kilometres of the rail network between 2023 and 2024. Routes that were electrified last year include Ahmedabad-Rajkot-Okha (499 km), Bengaluru-Talguppa (371 km), and Bhatinda-Firozpur-Jalandhar (301 km). The shift to electric traction is likely to cut 24 per cent carbon emissions by 2027-28.

The electrification programme brings environmental and economic benefits, promotes import substitution and creates jobs. It is important to utilise renewable energy sources for successful electrification. The goal is to become the greenest railway in the world by 2030.
