Iran plans to introduce smart irrigation to 20,000 hectares of farmland in 2026
It is expected to increase crop yields by 20-30 per cent
Iran's Ministry of Agriculture has announced plans to introduce smart irrigation systems on about 20,000 hectares by March next year. The implementation of the project will depend on budget approval, reports IRNA, a partner of TV BRICS, citing an official statement of the ministry.
Fariborz Abbasi, Director of the modern irrigation systems programme, said the ministry continues to cooperate with research centres and innovative companies to develop smart irrigation technologies. He said more than 100 pilot projects have been implemented over the past four years in different regions of the country.
Abbasi explained that such systems can reduce water consumption by 20 per cent, increase crop yields by 20-30 per cent and improve the overall efficiency of agricultural production by 40-50 per cent.
However, as the official emphasised, mass introduction of smart irrigation will require significant financial support.
