Iran’s eastern provinces poised to become transit hub with two mega projects

Officials hope these projects will position the country as a key transit link between Asia, the Middle East, and beyond

Iran is accelerating work on two major infrastructure projects in its eastern provinces, aiming to transform the region into a vital trade and transit corridor.

According to Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, the Zahedan–Birjand highway and the Chabahar–Sarakhs railway are central to a broader government strategy to improve connectivity, reduce transport risks, and boost economic development in underdeveloped areas.

Around 30 kilometres of the Zahedan–Birjand highway are expected to open by the next year, with 150 kilometres of the 211 km route already operational.

Sistan and Baluchestan governor Mansour Bijar called the highway a "vital transit artery" and said its completion would strengthen the province’s position in Iran’s eastern logistics network. Meanwhile, officials in neighbouring South Khorasan Province pointed to the Chabahar–Sarakhs railway as a transformative project with regional significance, linking the Indian Ocean to Central Asia via Iran’s only ocean port at Chabahar.

By enhancing access to international trade routes, Iranian officials hope these projects will position the country as a key transit link between Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.
