Kazakhstan to meet domestic electricity demand from early 2027

Expansion of power generation capacity is expected to create a 1.3 billion kWh electricity surplus by the end of 2027 and strengthen the country's export potential

Kazakhstan expects to fully meet its domestic electricity demand from the beginning of 2027, with a projected electricity surplus of approximately 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) by the end of the year following the implementation of the country's national energy and utilities modernisation programme. This is reported by Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS.

The outlook was presented by Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov during a government meeting, where he outlined the next stages of Kazakhstan's long-term strategy to strengthen energy security, modernise infrastructure and increase generating capacity.

According to the minister, 2,418 megawatts (MW) of new power generation capacity are scheduled to be commissioned in 2026 under the national programme. A further 825 MW is expected to come online in 2027.

The additional capacity is expected to enable the national power system to fully satisfy the country's growing electricity demand from the start of 2027. By the end of the year, Kazakhstan forecasts a surplus of around 1.3 billion kWh, creating greater flexibility within the national electricity system.

The government's long-term plans also include the commissioning of an additional 4,000 MW of generating capacity during 2028–2029. Once these projects are completed, Kazakhstan expects to establish a stable electricity surplus by 2029, while maintaining a 20 per cent reserve margin to ensure system reliability during periods of peak demand.

Alongside expanding generation capacity, Kazakhstan is continuing to modernise its energy infrastructure. As part of the national programme, authorities aim to reduce the depreciation rate of the country's electricity transmission networks to 62 per cent and district heating networks to 48 per cent during 2026, supporting greater efficiency and long-term reliability across the energy sector.
