Lula government announces creation of programme to invest in educational institutions
R$3.7 billion will be invested in the "consolidation" of existing campuses, R$600 million in the construction of new campuses and R$1.75 billion in university hospitals
Brazil's Education Minister Camilo Santana announced the Universities PAC programme, which will allocate R$5.5 billion (US$1 billion) under the new PAC programme to invest in federal universities and university hospitals. This is reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.
"The programme has two directions: the consolidation of undergraduate studies – with the construction of new academic buildings, laboratories, libraries, classrooms, academic structures, sports and cultural complexes – and the other direction of assistance to students – canteens, housing, health facilities and community centres," Santana explained.
According to the minister, investment in university hospitals will amount to R$1.75 billion (US$326 million): "There will be built eight new hospitals and 37 projects to expand existing ones."
