Rio de Janeiro officially creates new southwest zone after redrawing city's map

A new Southwest Zone has officially been established in Rio de Janeiro, following the enactment of a law redrawing the city's map. The reorganisation, which divides the existing West Zone into two distinct areas, aims to better address the specific needs and interests of the newly designated region, as reported by Metropoles, a partner of TV BRICS.

The primary rationale behind the creation of the Southwest Zone is the recognition that the various districts within the former West Zone have differing priorities and requirements. By separating these areas, authorities hope to streamline public services and allocate resources more effectively.

The new zone spans approximately 200 square kilometres, encompasses 21 districts, and is home to an estimated 1.2 million residents.

Local government officials emphasise that the creation of the Southwest Zone will facilitate a more targeted approach to infrastructure development and resource allocation.

According to the source, the mayor indicated his support for the reorganisation, stating that it was appropriate to recognise the unique character of the districts that now make up the Southwest Zone.
