Xi Jinping: green and low-carbon transition – trend of our time
President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping delivered a video address at a special event held during the High-Level Week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He called on the international community to take joint action in combating the consequences of climate change, reports CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.
"China will, by 2035, reduce economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 7 per cent to 10 per cent from peak levels, striving to do better, and increase the share of non-fossil fuels in total energy consumption to over 30 per cent"![]()

Large-scale reforestation, a shift to electric vehicles as the main mode of transport, the expansion of the national carbon quota market, and the creation of a climate-resilient model of society are also envisaged.
Xi Jinping stressed that developed countries, being responsible for the largest emissions, should provide financial and technological support to other states.
The position of the Chinese leader was also supported by the President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, as reported by Brasil de Fato, a partner of TV BRICS. He urged developed countries to expand developing nations’ access to green technologies.
"The energy transition paves the way for a production and technological transformation comparable in scale to the industrial revolution. [...] For this to happen at the global level, economically developed countries must set their own goals for achieving climate neutrality"![]()

According to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who delivered a speech at the opening of the summit, the transition to clean energy is not only an environmental issue but also an economic advantage. This process creates new jobs and increases energy security.
"Despite huge fossil fuel subsidies that distort market mechanisms, last year investment in clean energy was twice as high as in fossil fuels. The conclusion is clear: clean energy is competitive, and climate action is imperative"![]()

The summit was held ahead of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP30), scheduled for 10–21 November 2025 in Belem, Brazil.
In the year marking the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, the leaders of China and Brazil put forward initiatives consistent with the position of BRICS member states. The declaration of the group emphasises the importance of Article 6 of the Agreement, which allows countries to jointly implement climate projects. A practical instrument for this will be the BRICS Carbon Market Memorandum, designed to help states meet their environmental commitments.
