Belarusian scientists unveil oil-eating bacteria to accelerate environmental clean-up

Breakthrough microbial technology reduces pollution treatment time to six weeks and supports global ecological efforts

Belarus has unveiled a new biotechnology solution to tackle oil pollution, as researchers from the Institute of Microbiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus develop bacteria capable of rapidly breaking down petroleum contaminants without harming ecosystems, reports Belteleradiocompany, a partner of TV BRICS.

The innovation addresses one of the most pressing environmental challenges worldwide. According to global estimates, around six million tonnes of oil hydrocarbons enter the oceans each year, contaminating water and soil and requiring lengthy remediation processes that can take months or even years.

The newly developed bacteria significantly boosts this process by transforming oil into a more easily digestible form. Instead of simply decomposing hydrocarbons, the microorganisms first release natural biosurfactants that reduce oil viscosity and convert it into an emulsion, making it easier to process and remove.

As a result, polluted environments can be restored in as little as one and a half months, two to three times faster than traditional methods.

Researchers note that work on such biological solutions has been ongoing for more than two decades, with earlier versions of bio-based treatments already applied in environmental remediation. The latest development focuses on increasing the speed and efficiency of biodegradation while maintaining ecological safety.

Beyond environmental clean-up, the bacteria have demonstrated potential in industrial applications, including wastewater treatment, where they help break down fats and organic residues, improving purification processes.

The technology is now moving from laboratory research to real-world testing, with pilot projects underway and plans to launch full-scale production of advanced biopreparations by 2027.
