Brazilian expert highlights BRICS' role in strengthening multipolar world
He said that by joining forces, Latin American countries and their partners are tackling global issues
BRICS plays an important role in strengthening regional stability and forming a multipolar world order. This was stated by Fabiano Mielniczuk, professor of political science at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).
The expert spoke at a discussion entitled "Geopolitical Transformations of Latin America: Challenges and Prospects for Russia’s Economic Relations with the Countries of the Region" at the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow. According to him, BRICS allows Latin American countries, Russia, China and other partners to jointly address current challenges and opens up new opportunities for equal cooperation.
In an exclusive commentary for TV BRICS, Fabiano Mielniczuk emphasised that there must be a clear understanding of the differences between a full BRICS member and a partner country, as well as of the process for moving from one category to the other. This clarity is particularly important given that Brazil has placed “Institutionalisation of the BRICS” among its priorities for the presidency.
The political scientist also drew attention to the BRICS online summit, which will discuss trade policy, global economic challenges and the strengthening of a multipolar world. As previously stated by Brazilian President's Chief Adviser Celso Amorim in an interview with O Globo newspaper, the meeting, initiated by Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, may take place on 8 September.
Mielniczuk noted that various proposals for resolving these issues may be presented at the online summit.
"It will be interesting if we can promote the initiatives put forward during Russia's presidency of BRICS in 2024. This applies to the cross-border payment system, the BRICS grain exchange and the investment platform," the expert stressed.
Aleksander Stepanov, programme director of the Academy of Political Sciences and senior researcher at the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ILA RAS), also spoke at the discussion. He noted that during Russia's presidency of BRICS, a new partner country status was introduced, and the Latin American region became more actively involved in the work of the association, in particular thanks to the participation of Cuba and Bolivia in the group. However, in his opinion, in order to effectively solve regional problems, it is necessary to form a more representative majority of countries.
