Ethiopia nears 50 billion planted trees under national reforestation drive

The nationwide campaign combines environmental restoration, food security and sustainable economic development

Ethiopia is continuing to expand its Green Legacy initiative during the current rainy season, strengthening national efforts to combat climate change, restore degraded landscapes and enhance food security. Implemented under the theme "Let's Plant Hope", the campaign builds on previous experience by placing greater emphasis on the quality of planting and the long-term survival of trees. As reported by Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), a partner of TV BRICS.

Authorities have introduced measures to improve seedling survival by selecting drought-resistant and soil-conserving species suited to local ecosystems. Regional and local administrations have also established monitoring and maintenance systems to encourage community participation and ensure the sustainable management of newly planted areas.

The programme integrates environmental restoration with agricultural development. Alongside indigenous tree species, large numbers of fruit-bearing and economically valuable crops, including avocado, mango, papaya and coffee, are being planted to support household nutrition, strengthen rural livelihoods and contribute to local economic growth.

Launched in 2019, the Green Legacy initiative has already resulted in the planting of more than 40 billion seedlings. Ethiopia now aims to reach a cumulative total of 50 billion trees during the current campaign. According to official information, the programme has also created millions of jobs and supplied raw materials for domestic agro-processing industries.

The initiative is further contributing to regional environmental cooperation. Ethiopia continues to provide millions of seedlings to neighbouring countries, while expanded forest cover is helping to protect major infrastructure by reducing soil erosion and limiting flood-related impacts. Officials report that the campaign has achieved a seedling survival rate of more than 80 per cent through active public participation.
