Government report: Egypt's BRICS membership accelerates green transition
The country's membership in BRICS and the New Development Bank could expand opportunities for financing sustainable projects and strengthening cooperation with countries of the Global South
Egypt's membership in BRICS is creating strategic opportunities to accelerate the country's transition to green development by expanding cooperation with fellow BRICS countries in the fields of clean energy and the sustainable use of marine resources. It is also helping to attract financing for sustainable development projects, MENA, a partner of TV BRICS, reports.
The report notes that cooperation with BRICS member states enables Egypt to make greater use of advanced technologies and the experience of its partners in implementing the national sustainable development strategy, Egypt Vision 2030.
The energy sector is identified as one of the key areas of development. The report highlights the national Nexus of Water, Food and Energy programme, launched during the COP27 climate conference. It brings together projects in the fields of energy, food and water.
Among the other initiatives highlighted in the report are financing sustainable transport projects, the construction of the Benban Solar Park, the implementation of the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, and the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia production, environmentally sustainable logistics and green ports.
Beyond these initiatives, Egypt and China are expanding cooperation within the BRICS framework. Their joint projects include the establishment of a smart agriculture laboratory and the implementation of a three-year cooperation plan focused on agricultural innovation, the development of drought-resistant crop varieties, the expansion of organic farming, the digitalisation of agriculture, and the exchange of expertise in livestock breeding and agricultural mechanisation. The two countries are also working together on the construction of a seawater desalination membrane manufacturing plant, a wind turbine production facility and a large-scale wind farm.
