Egypt to build wind turbine manufacturing plant and large wind farm with Chinese involvement

Egypt is set to build the country’s first wind turbine manufacturing plant, with an annual production capacity of up to 2 GW, as well as a 2,000 MW wind farm in the Northern Gulf of Suez region. This was reported by Sada El-Balad, a partner of TV BRICS.

The construction agreement was signed by a Chinese company specialising in advanced wind turbine manufacturing technology, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EEHC) and Egypt’s New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

The plant will supply local wind energy projects with the necessary equipment, whilst surplus production will be exported to countries in Africa and the Middle East. The plant is scheduled to come on stream within no more than two years of the agreements being signed.

The wind farm project will be financed in Egyptian pounds. It is planned to connect it to the national grid within 23 months.

It is noted that the emergence of such facilities in Egypt is in line with the country’s plan to support industry and localise modern technologies, increase the share of local components in renewable energy projects, and expand the electrical engineering industry.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasised that the government continues to cooperate with public bodies and the private sector to achieve the objectives of the national energy strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the country’s energy mix to 45 per cent over the next two years, as well as the development of energy storage systems to improve the efficiency of solar and wind power generation and ensure the stable operation of the national electricity grid.
