First hydrogen-powered bicycles to appear on Shanghai streets
The project is of importance for China’s hydrogen industry and the application of humanoid robots

Ten two-wheeled hydrogen-powered vehicles, which are almost indistinguishable in appearance from conventional electric bicycles, are set to begin operation at the Science and Technology Park of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. This was reported by El Ciudadano, a TV BRICS partner.
The hydrogen bicycles are equipped with a 400-watt fuel cell featuring a closed-loop air cooling system. The hydrogen fuel cell replaces a conventional lithium battery and generates electricity directly during movement. The new vehicles have a range of more than 100 kilometres and a service life of 3,000 hours.
The Chinese project aims to test the potential use of hydrogen in light transport and lay the groundwork for applying the technology in humanoid robots, which require solid-state fuel cells for safe operation indoors.
The launch of ten hydrogen-powered bicycles will mark the beginning of a larger-scale plan. Project organisers expect to eventually introduce at least 400 such vehicles. Analysts note that the number of innovative bicycles is less important than testing the full cycle of hydrogen production, storage and use.
