Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian marks his 72nd birthday
This is the third birthday he has celebrated as Iran’s head of state since taking office in July 2024

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian marks his 72nd birthday on 29 September 2026. Born in 1954 in Mahabad, he is a cardiac surgeon by training and has held senior positions in medicine, higher education and government.
Before entering the presidency, Pezeshkian served as President of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. He also represented Tabriz in the Iranian parliament.
Pezeshkian was elected President of Iran in July 2024, receiving 53.66 per cent of the vote in the second round of the presidential election. He formally took office as Iran's 9th president and was sworn in before parliament on 30 July 2024.
His presidency has coincided with Iran's first years as a full member of BRICS. Iran joined the group in 2024 alongside Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, expanding its participation in cooperation among countries of the Global South.
One of Pezeshkian's first major BRICS engagements as president came at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024. During the summit, Iran took part as a full member of the group.
Iran continued its participation in BRICS initiatives during the Brazilian presidency in 2025. Among the areas in which the country contributed to the group's work was renewable energy: Iran hosted the fourth meeting of the BRICS Working Group on New and Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency in Tehran in May 2025. The meeting was recognised in the BRICS ministerial framework as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation in sustainable technologies.
In September 2026, Pezeshkian participated in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. His visit marked another stage in Iran's engagement with the group under his presidency. He also participated in the Leaders' Session of the BRICS Business Forum, while discussions on the sidelines of the summit addressed further cooperation within BRICS.
