Masoud Pezeshkian wins Iran's presidential election

The voter turnout was 49.8 per cent


Former Iranian Health Minister Masoud Pezeshkian has won the second round of the Iranian presidential election. This was reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

After all 30.530 million ballots were processed, Pezeshkian, who became the ninth elected president in the history of modern Iran, won 16.384 million votes – 53.6 per cent of the total.

Saeed Jalili, the Iranian leader's representative in the republic's Supreme National Security Council, received 13.538 million votes – 44.3 per cent of the total.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Pezeshkian on his election as Iran's president.

"I trust that your activity in the presidential post will contribute to further building up constructive bilateral cooperation in all areas for the benefit of our friendly peoples"

Saudi Arabian Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has sent a cable of congratulations to Masoud Pezeshkian on the occasion of his winning in the presidential elections in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"On the occasion of your winning in the presidential elections in the Islamic Republic of Iran, I am pleased to send sincere congratulations and best wishes for success to Your Excellency as well as steady progress and prosperity for your country and people. I affirm my keenness to develop and deepen relations binding the two countries and peoples and serving our mutual interests"

Among the leaders, Pazeshkian was also congratulated by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he looked “forward to working closely” with Pezeshkian.

"Congratulations on your election as the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Looking forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our warm and long-standing bilateral relationship for the benefit of our peoples and the region"

President of the UAE Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has also sent a congratulatory message to Masoud Pezeshkian on the occasion of his victory.

"Congratulations to Masoud Pezeshkian on his election as President of Iran. I wish him success in his role and look forward to working together to further strengthen ties between the UAE and Iran for the benefit of our two nations and peoples"

Venezuela's Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto released a statement in which he also congratulated Iran on the election of a new president.

“Venezuela expresses its conviction that the decision made by the Iranian people will contribute to the prosperity of this nation,” Yvan Gil Pinto's statement read.

Voter turnout was 49.8 per cent. 30.530 million voters took part in the second round of voting. 

Inauguration of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian may take place within a week. This was reported by a speaker of the Iranian Parliament Akbar Ranjbarzadeh.

On 5 July, Iran held the second round of extraordinary presidential elections, which are being held in connection with the death of the country's chief executive Ebrahim Raisi.
