China praised the inclusion of the Spring Festival as a UN holiday
In its resolution, the UN General Assembly recognised the importance of the holiday, which is celebrated by many member states
China has praised the inclusion of the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, as a UN holiday.
The holiday is the oldest and most important traditional festival in Chinese culture, a joyous time for family reunions and saying goodbye to the old year.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, Spring Festival customs are present in nearly 200 countries and regions, making it a global cultural event.
"This holiday symbolises the blessing and warmth of spring, as well as the spiritual foundation of Chinese culture - peace, harmony and unity," she added. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
The day before, the UN officially included Chinese New Year in its calendar of conferences and meetings starting from 2024.
In its resolution, the UN General Assembly recognised the importance of the holiday, which is celebrated by many member states.
The Spring Festival will be celebrated on 10 February 2024. As such, the weekend will be extended by just over a week so that citizens can celebrate the coming of the Year of the Dragon with the whole family.
