Egyptian and Chinese officials discuss bilateral cooperation in railway sector

The meeting discussed prospects for future co-operation

Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir welcomed Deputy Minister of Transport and Head of China's National Railway Administration Fei Dongbin, as well as the heads of companies specialising in railway transport.

Al-Wazir emphasised the long-standing Egyptian-Chinese partnership and their joint efforts to advance transport initiatives. One of the key projects is the 105.5km Light rail transit (LRT) project with 19 stations, developed by a Chinese company in cooperation with Egyptian organisations. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

The first phases of the LRT project are already operational and connect Adly station in Mansour with Arts and Culture station. Work on the third phase is ongoing and plans for the fourth phase are underway. A memorandum of understanding was also signed to extend the LRT from Al-Rehab to the Administrative Capital.

Fei Dongbin praised the progress of Egypt's transport sector, noting the extensive 10,000km railway network and the development of a 2,000km high-speed electric train system.

The meeting discussed the prospects for future cooperation, and Al Wazir suggested establishing a local transport production centre in Egypt to produce tractors, railway wagons, metro and LRT cars for domestic needs and exports. Fei Dongbin supported this initiative, noting its potential to strengthen co-operation.
