G20 summit begins in Brazil

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is scheduled to be launched on the first day

The G20 summit opens in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on 18 November. For two days, representatives of the G20 countries will discuss sustainable development, global governance reform, social inclusion and the fight against hunger.

Most heads of state and government of the group's member states are expected to attend the meeting. In particular, Argentine President Javier Milei, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and other G20 leaders have arrived in Brazil. The delegations of Russia and Saudi Arabia will be led by Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, while Brazil will be represented by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In addition, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Bolivian President Luis Arce, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and others will attend the event.

Lula da Silva outlined what the discussions at the meeting will focus on.

"The G20 summit in Brazil will be attended by representatives of 42 countries. We will discuss not only the fight against hunger and poverty, but also the energy transition, in which our country has significant advantages, as well as the topic of global governance. UN reform is necessary to ensure that the organisation's decisions are enforced"

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva President of Brazil

The first day of the event will see the official launch of Brazil's proposed Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, according to the alliance's official website. This mechanism aims to bring together international actors and the private sector to take action to guarantee the availability of food, especially in states in need. The Brazilian initiative has already been supported by the BRICS countries in the Kazan Declaration adopted at the end of the XVI summit of the group.

The main practical result of the G20 summit should be the final declaration of the leaders.

The G20 summit on 18-19 November in Rio de Janeiro is the key event of Brazil's presidency in the group, held under the motto "Building a just world and a sustainable planet". The presidency will pass to South Africa next year.

The G20 is a leading political-level forum where the world's largest economies develop common approaches to key global financial and economic challenges. The group includes 19 countries and international associations, including the African Union. According to official data published on the G20 website, the G20 states account for about 85 per cent of global GDP, more than 75 per cent of international trade and about 2/3 of the world's population.
