India's electronics production reached US$136.3 billion in the 2025–2026 financial year, representing an increase of 15.8 per cent compared with the previous financial year. The announcement was made by Jitin Prasada, India's Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, according to the IANS, a TV BRICS partner.

According to the Minister, India has significantly strengthened its position in the global electronics market over the past 12 years. During this period, electronics exports increased elevenfold, exceeding US$41.6 billion. The most notable growth has been in the smartphone segment: in the 2025–2026 financial year, smartphones became India's largest export category, surpassing petroleum products, precious stones and jewellery.

The Government noted that 99.2 per cent of all mobile phones currently used in the country are manufactured in India. In recent years, the country has transformed itself from a major smartphone importer into a net exporter, shipping more mobile phones abroad than it imports.

The development of the electronics industry is also creating new employment opportunities. Today, around 2.5 million people are employed in the sector, including both direct and indirect jobs.

Approximately 1.2 million people work within the mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem, while women account for nearly 70 per cent of employees at a number of high-tech manufacturing facilities.

The Government continues to implement production incentive programmes, expanding the manufacture of laptops, tablets, servers and electronic components.
