Kazakhstan becomes fencing world champion for first time in history

Kazakh épée fencers Ruslan Kurbanov, Vadim Sharlaimov, Yerlik Sertay and Kirill Prokhodov won the gold medal at the World Fencing Championships, achieving the best result in the history of Kazakhstan's national team in the men's team event. This was reported by Kazinform, a TV BRICS partner.

The Kazakh team reached the World Championships final for the first time. During the decisive match, each of the four athletes made a vital contribution, taking turns to maintain and extend their team's advantage. Kirill Prokhodov delivered the final bout, securing a 45–40 victory for Kazakhstan.

The members of Kazakhstan's historic men's épée team range in age from 19-year-old Kirill Prokhodov to 34-year-old Ruslan Kurbanov.

Previously, Kazakhstan's best result in the men's team épée event at the World Championships had been a bronze medal in 2025. This achievement was also reported by Kazinform, a TV BRICS partner.

The 2026 World Fencing Championships are being held in Hong Kong from 22 to 30 July. The competition features individual and team events in épée, foil and sabre for both men and women.
