Iran emerges as regional leader in liver transplantation

Tehran's iconic hospital has seen record numbers of liver transplants in recent years

Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran has successfully completed its 2,000th liver transplant, reaffirming Iran’s position as one of the leading centres for organ transplantation in the region. This is reported by Pars Today, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to Ali Jafarian, head of the hospital’s liver transplant unit, Iran remains a pioneer in liver transplantation in West Asia. He noted that the quality of transplants performed at the hospital meets international standards. On average, the hospital carries out 15 to 20 liver transplants each month.

Jafarian described liver transplantation as a complex and strategic medical treatment that many countries are unable to provide due to a lack of specialised infrastructure. He stressed that Iran has earned a prominent place in the region thanks to its expertise and well-developed transplant programme.

The outcomes of liver transplants in Iran remain competitive with top global centres. Jafarian reported a five-year survival rate of approximately 75 per cent, a figure that aligns with international averages.
