Population of Persian zebras in Garmsar Desert National Park is expected to increase from 36 to 50
This will bring this valuable species back from the brink of extinction
Several foals have been born in the park during the breeding season, ensuring the survival of the species. To prevent genetic disorders and maintain genetic diversity, adult male zebras are relocated from other national parks.
The Persian zebra, a subspecies of onager, was once abundant in West Asia, Central Asia and China, but is now endangered. The zebra population is low due to factors such as low reproductive capacity and a high mortality rate among foals. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
Conservation efforts are focused on captive breeding and reintroducing zebras to their natural habitat in the hope of stabilising the population.
Wildlife conservation is critical to preserving biodiversity and protecting endangered species. Threats such as habitat destruction and human activities have led to the decline of wildlife populations.
