Researchers discover dragonfly fossil in China that is approximately 165 million years old
Its discovery in the north of the country
Chinese scientists have identified the most complete dragonfly fossil, which is approximately 165 million years old.
The fossil, found in Ningcheng County, represents the best-preserved fossil of the Euthemistidae family from the Middle Jurassic period, according to a joint research team from Capital Normal University, Guangzhou University and Sun Yat-sen University.
The team said the discovered species of the extinct dragonfly was named Kidaneuthemis ningchengensis. This is reported by CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.
The family Euthemistidae is named for its slender sickle-shaped wings, dense veins, numerous long veins and slender patterned body.
This find represents an important foundation for research on the natural history and evolution of dragonflies, and provides a more complete understanding of the morphology of the family Euthemistidae for the international community of entomologists.
