Russian schoolchildren win nine medals at International Junior Science Olympiad in Sirius

The national team achieved a historic result, winning 7 gold and 2 silver medals

From 23 November to 2 December, the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) was held for the first time in Russia, on the federal territory of Sirius. The Russian team claimed victory, winning nine medals: 7 gold and 2 silver. The TV BRICS International Media Network acted as an international media partner of the event.

Schoolchildren aged 15 and under from 24 countries took part in the Olympiad. Russia was represented by nine students, one of whom – Arseniy Gasanenko – became the absolute winner, showing the best results in all three rounds of the competition. In addition to the Russians, gold medals were also won by participants from India and Thailand. Silver medals were awarded to team members from Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and other countries.

Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated the team on its outstanding success.

“This year our students managed to significantly improve their results: all 9 schoolchildren won medals – 7 gold and 2 silver. During the competition, they completed tasks in physics, chemistry and biology. These subjects form the foundation of technological leadership – a national goal set by President Vladimir Putin,” he said.

Russia’s Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov highlighted the high level of student preparation. “Their medals confirm the high standard of Russian education and the teaching of science subjects. [...] Developing talent and improving the quality of education are among our priorities, within which infrastructure is being modernised and the career guidance system enhanced. And the result of this systematic work is evident – every year more children choose an advanced level of study in science subjects and mathematics, and the number of participants in Olympiad competitions continues to grow,” the minister said.

The Olympiad tasks this year were interdisciplinary, combining physics, chemistry and biology. For the first time, participants used computers for data processing during the practical round. The organisation of the tournament received high praise from the international community.

IJSO President Emiel de Kleijn noted that the Olympiad in Russia became one of the best in the history of the competition thanks to the strong practical orientation of the tasks and the impeccable work of the organisers.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Education of Russia, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and the Talent and Success Educational Foundation. The Russian team’s training was conducted at MIPT.
