Iran and Malaysia have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in higher education, science and research during a telephone conversation between the two countries’ ministers responsible for higher education, as reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to Iran’s Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, the talks focused on strengthening university partnerships, increasing scientific exchanges and promoting joint technological initiatives between the two nations.

Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology Hossein Simaei referred to previous meetings with Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education Zambry Abdul Kadir and highlighted the friendly relations between the two countries. The Malaysian minister also recalled his earlier visit to Tehran and expressed appreciation for the hospitality received during the trip.

Simaei called for broader collaboration in higher education, research and innovation, including the implementation of joint scientific projects and research grant programmes between universities and academic institutions in Iran and Malaysia.

The Malaysian minister welcomed the proposal, stating that there is strong support in Malaysia for deepening scientific relations with Iran, particularly in the field of higher education. He added that several consultations and initiatives are already underway to strengthen academic engagement between the two countries.

Analysts note that the expansion of academic cooperation between countries across Asia and the broader BRICS space is becoming increasingly important for scientific diplomacy, technological development and long-term educational partnerships.

Earlier, Iran and Malaysia strengthened academic ties through a series of cooperation agreements between leading universities and scientific institutions. In 2024, the two countries also organised a joint autumn school in Kuala Lumpur for young researchers and students focused on artificial intelligence, climate resilience, water management and emerging technologies, further expanding bilateral scientific and educational exchange.
