Iran and Malaysia advance scientific partnership with new joint initiatives

Tehran and Kuala Lumpur outline new plans for long-term academic, technological and research cooperation

Iran and Malaysia are strengthening their scientific partnership through a set of new joint initiatives aimed at expanding academic exchange, developing research capacity and supporting innovation across priority technological fields. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

During a recent meeting in Tehran, Iran’s scientific counsellor in East Asia, Alireza Pourtavakol, held talks with senior representatives of Malaysia’s leading technological institutions to outline practical steps for deepening bilateral cooperation. The discussions focused on establishing a joint research centre, launching student and faculty exchange programmes, offering reciprocal scholarships, and supporting collaborative publication projects and short-term specialised scientific courses.

Pourtavakol stressed that both sides are prioritising “structured, long-term mechanisms that allow researchers from our countries to work together on shared challenges”. He highlighted areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, intelligent automation, renewable energy and nanotechnology as key pillars of future cooperation.

Among the proposals under consideration are:

  • creation of a permanent joint research hub;

  • development of coordinated training modules in emerging technologies;

  • industrialisation and commercial application of high-tech research outputs;

  • cooperation between science and technology parks;

  • the introduction of creative research sabbaticals for academics.

The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating joint scientific events and youth-orientated academic diplomacy programmes.

The current push builds on a growing record of Iran–Malaysia academic collaboration. In 2024, an autumn school for students and scholars from both countries was held in Kuala Lumpur, bringing together around 50 participants for an intensive programme dedicated to preparing young researchers to address global challenges. The curriculum covered themes such as artificial intelligence and security, water resource management, Islamic cultural heritage, climate resilience and the balance between scientific reasoning and ethical values.

Further institutional ties were strengthened through recent memoranda of understanding between major Iranian universities and Malaysian counterparts. These agreements focus on expanding joint research, sharing technology, and creating specialised working groups to design short-, medium- and long-term cooperation frameworks in engineering, agriculture, health sciences and innovation.
